Genjuro est un potier qui vit dans un petit village de campagne, Ohmi, au temps du Moyen Âge japonais. Un jour, il part vendre ses pots à la ville en compagnie de Tobeï. Quand Genjuro revient à Ohmi, il a gagné beaucoup d'argent car la guerre avec l'armée Shibata fait monter les prix. Tobeï, quant à lui, s'est engagé avec des samouraïs, mais il rentrera bien vite chez lui, humilié par de vrais guerriers. Genjuro veut augmenter sa productivité pour gagner encore plus d'argent. Il part pour la ville avec Tobeï et la femme de celui-ci. En ville, Genjuro tombe amoureux de dame Wakasa, Tobeï devient un vrai samouraï grâce à l'argent de la vente qu'il a volé, et la femme de Tobeï devient prostituée après avoir été violée en le poursuivant. Cependant, un prêtre dit a Genjuro que la femme qu'il aime est en fait un fantôme, et que son âme est manipulée par des esprits malfaisants ; il rentre alors au village. Tobeï et sa femme se rencontrent par hasard ; Tobeï abandonne son métier de samouraï et rentre lui aussi au village avec sa femme. Mais la femme de Genjuro, Miyagi, est morte entre-temps en voulant retourner au village. Quant à ce dernier, il ne lui reste que son fils.
Genjuro is a potter who sees in a small village of campaign, Ohmi, at the time of the Japanese Middle Ages. One day, he leaves sell his pots in the city together with Tobeï. When Genjuro comes back to Ohmi, he earned a lot of silver because war with the army Shibata made take up prices. Tobeï, as for him, got involved with samurais, but he will quickly come back to him, humiliated by warlike truths. Genjuro wants to augment his productiveness to earn some more silver. He leaves for the city with Tobeï and the wife of this one. In city, Genjuro falls loving lady Wakasa, Tobeï becomes a true samurai thanks to the silver of sale which he stole, and the woman of Tobeï becomes prostituted having been violated by following it. However, a said priest has Genjuro that the woman whom he loves is in fact a ghost, and that her soul is manipulated by evil minds; it comes back then to the village. Tobeï and his wife meet incidentally; Tobeï leaves his samurai's job and also comes back to the village with his wife. But the woman of Genjuro, Miyagi, died meantime by wanting to go back to the village. As for this last, he has only his son.
Genjuro es un alfarero que vió en una aldea de campo, Ohmi, al tiempo de la Edad media japonesa. Un día, él se va venderle sus vasijas a la ciudad en compañía de Tobeï. Cuando Genjuro vuelve a Ohmi, ganó mucho dinero porque la guerra con el ejército Shibata hecho subir los precios. Tobeï, en cuanto a le, emprendió con samurais, pero volverá muy rápido a su casa, humillado por verdades guerreras. Genjuro quiere aumentar su productividad para ganar todavía más dinero. Él se va a la ciudad con Tobeï y la mujer de éste. En ciudad, Genjuro se enamora de dama Wakasa, Tobeï se hace un verdadero samurai gracias al dinero de la venta que robó, y la mujer de Tobeï se hace prostituida después de haber sido violada persiguiéndolo. Sin embargo, un sacerdote dicho tiene Genjuro que la mujer a quien quiere es de hecho un fantasma, y que su alma es manipulada por espíritus maléficos; él vuelve entonces al pueblo. Tobeï y su mujer se encuentran por casualidad; Tobeï también abandona su oficio de samurai y vuelve al pueblo con su mujer. Pero la mujer de Genjuro, Miyagi, murió entre tanto queriendo regresar al pueblo. En cuanto a este último, le queda sólo su hijo.
